Entrance Testing
Entrance testing is the step taken for enrollment in Temple Christian School after all the required forms and other paperwork have been turned in, and the enrollment and testing fees have been paid. Entrance testing is critical to ensure that your student will have every chance to succeed at TCS.
KINDERGARTEN uses a teacher-created test designed to give the K-5 faculty a working knowledge of the basic abilities of your child. It is a teacher-directed test that takes about 10 minutes to administer. Counting, shape recognition, letter and number writing are included in this short test. K-5 students are admitted on a rolling basis until the end of September. After that time, students are required to meet further phonics and reading standards in order to mesh within the flow of the curriculum.
FIRST AND SECOND GRADES also use a teacher-created test. The first grade test is a teacher-directed test that takes about 20 minutes to administer. The student is asked to write numbers and letters, name and give the sounds of letters, and add single digits. The second grade test is half teacher-directed and half self-administered. It includes reading comprehension, phonics blends, addition and subtraction, mental arithmetic and math story problems. Allow up to 45 minutes for testing.
THIRD, FOURTH, AND FIFTH GRADES take two timed, self-administered tests. Communication Arts covers reading comprehension, spelling, grammar and punctuation at the appropriate grade levels. Mathematics begins with addition and subtraction, then moves on to multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percentages. Students begin two grade levels below their grade for the upcoming school year, and continue until time runs out, or they are unable to answer further questions. Each test is 35 minutes in duration. Allow approximately one hour and ten minutes for testing.
SIXTH, SEVENTH, AND EIGHTH GRADES take three timed, self-administered tests. An IQ test is administered first. Communication Arts covers reading comprehension, spelling, grammar and punctuation at the appropriate grade levels. Mathematics covers more difficult addition and subtraction, then moves on to multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percentages. It also tests basic geometry skills and fundamentals of algebra. Students begin two grade levels below their grade for the upcoming school year, and continue until time runs out, or they are unable to answer further questions. Each test is 35 minutes in duration. Allow approximately two hours for testing.
NINTH, TENTH, ELEVENTH, AND TWELFTH GRADES take three timed, self-administered tests. An IQ test is administered first. Communication Arts covers reading comprehension, spelling, grammar and punctuation at the appropriate grade levels. Mathematics covers multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percentages. It also tests algebraic skills through Algebra II, as well as Geometry. Students begin at a set place and continue until time runs out, or they are unable to answer further questions. Each test is 35 minutes in duration. Allow approximately two hours for testing.
Additional testing is available for placement into honors math classes, beginning with Pre-Algebra in the 7th grade. Honors math classes include Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Precal/Trig and Calculus. Please speak to the counselor if this is something you would like to pursue.
